MOGADISHU (Sunatimes) - Somalia’s government troops backed by the African Union peacekeepers have recaptured key bases from the terror linked Islamist group Al-Shabaab in Mogadishu, officials said on Thursday.
Heavily armed government forces supported by the AU troops attacked Al-Shabaab militias in the former interior ministry building.
Witnesses told Sunatimes that Al-Shabaab has retreated from the area after being defeated in the latest fighting. Some reports say that Al-Shabaab lost fighters in the confrontation with the government and AU troops.
“Our troops took over strategic positions from the rebel side and they are making progress in the war. We hope that we will take over the whole capital in the coming months.” Military commander said.
The government’s achievement in the battle came as another battalion of Burundian troops have arrived in the capital on Thursday to enforce the peacekeeping mission. This is the fourth battalion from Burundi.
The latest reinforcements came with the admission of the United Nations as the African nations still demanding that a 20,000-strong force is needed to root out the militants from the capital of Somalia.
On Tuesday members of the United Nations Security Council gave green light to the request of the African Union of increasing the mission in Somalia.
