Evening news

Mogadishu (Sunatimes) The national Supreme Court of Somalia has today verified president Sharif’s decision on the contentious matter of the Prime Minister’s approval by the parliament.

The court clarified the disputed articles in the constitution between President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and parliament speaker Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan.

The disagreement between the speaker and the president started when Sharif Hassan postponed a vote to approve the PM on Saturday after the assembly descended into chaos on whether the voting will be done through a secrete ballot exercise or through the show of hand.

Somalia’s parliament speaker was insisting that the lawmakers cast their votes in secret ballot while the president wanted an open vote be carried out.

A clarification letter sent by the court ruled out that the lawmakers should carry out an open vote to approve or disapprove the new Prime Minister. The court called to the speaker of the parliament to uphold the constitution.

The letter read that according to articles 82, 40, 50 of the transitional federal constitution ruled out that the vote for the appointed Prime Minister will be openly as traditionally it was.

The Supreme Court made its verdict after president Sharif asked the high court judge to clarify the disputed articles.

Parliament will hold its meeting on Wednesday to vote for the Prime Minister to give him an approval or reject his appointment.
