Cadado (Sunatimes) A British aid worker released by Somali gunmen early yesterday after being abducted last week has been flown to Nairobi today at 10.00 am (East African time).

Some residents of Adado have confirmed that Mr. Frans Barnard flew to Kenya and will be received by officials of Save The Children charity although questions continued over whether a ransom was paid to end his six-day ordeal.

A negotiator involved in securing Barnard’s release earlier said that$100,000 was paid to the gunmen.

“The gunmen asked for $150,000 to free the hostage but they were only paid $100, 000,” the negotiator said, on the condition of anonymity. He did not specify who paid the ransom.

However, Save The Children charity has denied any payment of ransom to the gunmen.

Mr. Barnard told reporters in Adado shortly before he took a flight to Nairobi that he was happy to have regained his freedom. He gave special thanks to those who participated in his released.

Barnard went to Adado to supervise a children nutritional service center that was to be established by Save The Children charity organization.
