Beletweyne (Sunatimes) River Shabelle which has caused server flooding in most parts of the Hiraan region has today reduced its water levels. In Beletweyne, the capital of the Hiran region, water levels of river Shabelle is reported to have drastically reduced.

River Shabelle has recently flooded after it rained heavily in the Ethiopian Highlands which is the source of the two main rivers, Juba and Shabelle Rivers in Somalia.

The floods have caused much destruction in the Hiran Region. Local farmers have lost their crops as residential houses and other properties were destroyed by the flood water.

Residents who houses and farms have been flooded felt relieved when the water levels of the river reduced today.

However, the seasonal long rains are expected to start soon and that is causing more fears among the local people.

The Ogadenia region in Ethiopia and the Hiran region in Somalia usually receive rainfall at the same time making the lower lands in the Hiran region more vulnerable to flooding.
