Mogadishu,Sunatimes- At least 20 people have been killed in a car accident in the Lower Jubba region in southern Somalia on Saturday evening eye witnesses and medical sources confirmed Sunday.

Residents in the Ber-Hano village about 550 kilometers south of the capital Mogadishu said that a lorry traveling at a high speed swerved they way and suddenly over turned killing 20 and wounding scores of others.

"The lorry was traveling from the Kenyan side of the border and was en route to the port town of Kismayo when the deadly accident went place on Saturday evening" said an elder in the Ber-Hano village Hajji Muse Ahmed who was reached for comment Sunday.

Hospital sources in the town of Kismayo indicate that the death tall is expected to rise because of the very serious wounds that some of the people are sustaining.

"We have 20 deaths here most of them are women and children, it was a very tragic moment" said a nurse at the Kismayo hospital who remained anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The destroyed ways which were not repaired for more than 20 years, most drivers who are not well skilled and drive cars at a high speed are said to be the major causes of car accidents in Somalia which hadn’t had a functioning central government since 1991
