Puntland forces have gunned down at least three pirates in a fatal rescue mission to free a Dubai owned vessel, MV Iceberg 1 and crew members who have been in captivity for the last three years.

The operation at an area along the Gar’ad shoreline in central Somali region of Mugud was aimed at freeing sailors and their vessel from ransom demanding Somali pirates.

Gar’ad district commissioner Abdikarin Keytun told Sunatimes their forces besieged the pirates who were holding the ship, adding that two of the seafarers on board the ship died during the operation.

MV Iceberg was captured by the pirates in Yemen at the port of Aden on Mar 29, 2010.
