President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud jetted back into the country early on Saturday from Turkey, where he has been touring for the last four days after receiving official invitation from Ankara.

On arrival, the president and his delegation was received by Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon and Speaker of the National Assembly Prof. Jawari among other senior Government officials.

Addressing the press inside the airport, president Mohamud said his meeting with Turkish government officials “has been successful”, adding that Somalia and Turkey have been enjoying deep-rooted cordial relations.

The president said they have signed significant agreements with Turkey including agreements on military and financial cooperation after meeting his Turkish counterpart Abdallah Gul in Ankara.

Turkey has pledged to train and offer logistical support to Somalia’s armed forces and advocate for the setting up of an international fund to be used to establish the security forces in Somalia.

Leading a government delegation on the official visit to Turkey, president Mohamud left Mogadishu early this month and held talks with top Turkish government officials in Ankara.

Meanwhile, the president has strongly condemned a grenade attack targeting near a mosque in a Somali inhabited district in the neighbouring Kenya.

At least five people died and several others injured including a local Member of Parliament after a grenade was thrown into a crowd near Al-Hidaya mosque in Nairobi’s Eastleigh district.

The president extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims of the attack and the Kenyan government, saying the attack is the handwork of groups seeking to stain the Somali-Kenya relations.
