The 2013-2015 humanitarian strategy targets immediate humanitarian needs of the Somali people and aims to enhance resilience and ultimately address the protracted nature of the humanitarian crisis in Somalia

This can be achieved in a proactive way through awareness-raising and educational initiatives so that people can make informed decisions and take action to best protect themselves and their property and livelihoods from pandemic diseases harsh conditions.

The members of the Somalia Social Workers Association (SOSWA) made a tremendous visit over last week and this week to few internal displaced peoples camps in Mogadishu in order to observe how the IDP’s people are struggling their daily live and their needs towards the ongoing humanitarian activities and realized that the innocent Somalis in the camps are deliberately under immorality and violence by clan and government militia’s and local Aid facilitator’s/implementers as they were looting and consistently intimidating by just about not publicly express any arguments on the Aid process as they did not much benefited the distributed or supplied items and goods.

SOSWA also acknowledged that the camps health and hygiene is been deteriorated similar the common health and hygiene conditions in across Mogadishu city by the local Aid and Medical facilitators. As you can see the pictures in the report toilets are inside the camps in which are so close each other and surrounded by very aroma dirty things and plants. Our members surprised when they met health workers working Oral Ryhydration Points (ORP’s) center near the Sayidka village in Howlwadag and Wardigley districts as they did nothing trustable health and hygiene consultancies to the vulnerable people near across where the center located. The center was formed and supported by the Save the Children.

There was no any public health awareness going on the two districts ORP’s according to several people that our members met and interviewed in the districts but requested not mentioning their names in the report due to their security.

Obviously, governments have a responsibility to promote public health and hygiene awareness on a continuous basis and provide mechanisms for the sustainability of such programmes but Somalia government have not been responsive to the paradigm shift due to the lack of adequate resources and political challenges still exist in the country although the UN and international Aid, Medical and Humanitarian agencies are continued in many parties in Somalia on the public health and hygiene recovery activities.

However, the Medical, Aid and Humanitarian agencies both UN and global levels should use knowledge, innovation and education to build a culture of healthy safety and resilience at all levels of Somali society without condition from corner to corner in the country.

This SOSWA report comes after when a three-year Humanitarian Appeal for Somalia was launched today in Mogadishu. For the first time, the launch took place in Somalia. The appeal was presented by the acting Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Mr. Stefano Porretti, to the Minister of Interior and National Security of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hon. Abdikarim Hussein Guled, who is responsible for humanitarian affairs.

The 2013-2015 humanitarian strategy targets immediate humanitarian needs of the Somali people and aims to enhance resilience and ultimately address the protracted nature of the humanitarian crisis in Somalia. The appeal for 2013 is $1.3 billion for 369 humanitarian projects targeting 3.8 million Somalis in need. The strategy will be implemented by 177 national and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and UN agencies operating in Somalia.

SOSWA recommendations;

·1. Public education, awareness and training programmes are essential for all people in order to reduce the current health problems in across Somalia.

· 2.Information exchanges dialogues and networks among health researchers, practitioners and stakeholders should be a critical part of the awareness building process in order to foster consistent knowledge collection and meaningful message dissemination and as well as create a strong community involvement.
