One civilian has died and two others sustained injuries on Sunday when gunbattle erupted within the government forces in central Somali town of Beledweyne, reports say.

The fight erupted after a section of the troops allegedly tried to loot a consignment of Khat being ferried by local traders forcing another group of soldiers to intervene in effort to secure the consignment from the errant officers.

Reports say all the victims were civilians who were caught up in the cross fire and security forces later managed to intervene the situation.

Relative calmness is now being reported from the area following the incident.

Meanwhile a delegation from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have arrived the town to assess security situation in the area.

The delegation led by AMISOM Force Commander, Lt-Gen Andrew Gutti was warmly welcomed by local leaders and officials from the Djiboutian contingent in Beledweyne.

Speaking shortly after holding talks with area leaders and security officials, Gutti said AMISOM will continue providing security in the region and urged other stakeholders to closely work together in securing the region.
