A Kenyan member of parliament has said the government not to allow hooligans to loot and distract properties in Somali inhabited Eastleigh district, Nairobi.

Speaking at a security meeting in Nairobi on Tuesday, Kamakunji MP, Yussuf Hassan, urged the government to step up security by deploying for officers into the area.

Eastleigh, a suburb north of the city mainly inhabited by ethic Somalis, was on Monday the scene of deadly ethic violence following the Sunday blast on minibus which killed more than eight people.

On Monday non-Somali Kenyan rioted and attacked ethnic Somalis in the district forcing police to use teargas to disperse the rioters.

The meeting was attended by Somali envoy to Kenyan Mohamed Ali Noor, local business community and religious leaders.

The Somali envoy to Kenyan noted that the recent minibus explosion was aimed at creating mistrust and difference between Somalis and other Kenyan communities.

Violence erupted after the explosion, with non-Somali Kenyans targeting members of the Somali community in the district.
