Unknown gunmen on Monday shot and killed a prominent elder in Ifo refugee camp, one of the camps forming the world’s largest refugee complex in northern Kenya near the border with Somalia.

Reports say four hooded gunmen attacked the elder, Mahad Said Du’aysane, at the area main market. Du’aysane was also a member of local security committee.

The assailants immediately fled the scene of the crime. Kenyan police who arrived at the scene immediately combed the area in search of the gunmen but no arrest was made so far.

Police have not yet commented on the incident.

It is yet known the reason behind her killing-but locals suspect that she was killed due to her role in Kenyan efforts to restore law and order in the volatile refugee camp.

The area has seen a wave of organised crime and grenade attacks targeting security officials and even refugees since last October when Kenyan troops crossed the border into Somalia in pursuit of Al-Shabaab militants whom it accused of being behind series of cross border attacks and kidnapping.

The incident comes less than two months when a Somali refugee woman shot and killed in the same camp under unknown circumstances.

The woman identified as Quresho Hussein Rage was reportedly a member of the area security committee and was killed by gunmen armed with pistols. The gunmen immediately fled the scene of the crime.

Police confirmed the incident and said they launched investigations into the killing. But so far no arrest was made in connection to the incident.
