Strengthening the Somalia-Uganda relations and deployment of extra Ugandan troops into Somalia in support of the AU mission in the country were among key issued the two leaders discussed.

The two leaders agreed to fully cooperate in fighting the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab militant group.

President Mohamud who is in Kampala where he attended Uganda’s Golden Jubilee Independence celebrations has also held talks with several African leaders including Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki.

During his meeting with Kibaki, the two leaders discussed Kenyan military presence in Somalia, the need for Kenyan troops to secure Kismayo and establishing of local administration for the port city which is now under the control of Somalia and AU forces.

President Mohamud also held talks with Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza and Italian deputy foreign affairs minister Staffan Demistura. They all discussed bilateral relationship between Somalia with their respective countries.

Earlier on Tuesday, Somali envoy to Uganda Sayid Ahmed Sheikh Dahir told Sunatimes the president is also scheduled to meet newly elected Egyptian president Mohamed Mursi and members of the Somali community in Kampala.

President Mohamud who is now in Uganda for the first foreign trip since he was voted in early last month is among the 15 presidents who have attended the Ugandan celebrations.
