President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud last night addressed the United Nations mini-summit on Somalia via video teleconference from Mogadishu.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon chaired the session on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During his speech, the president outlined his early priorities as: stabilization, the rule of law and good governance; economic recovery; peacebuilding and reconciliation; public service delivery; improved relations between Somalia and the rest of the world; and the unity and integrity of Somalia.

President Mohamud announced that the Somali authorities, under his leadership, would hold a future meeting with international partners to take these issues forward.

The president said he intends to form inclusive, broad-based governing institutions, saying that he is committed to transparent and accountable governance.

President Mohamud promised to fight corruption at all levels and set up representative and accountable institutions at the national, regional, district and local levels, in accordance with the Provisional Constitution of Somalia.

“We want to build a new Somalia in order to correct what went wrong before and to lead the people of Somalia in a leadership system based on justice, and we are committed to set up the third Somalia republic,” said the president.
