Somalia’s outgoing president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed Saturday night held talks with the newly elected speaker of the national assembly Prof. Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari to discuss the ongoing political process.

The outgoing president congratulated Jawari and his two deputies for their significant role in the process aimed at pulling Somali together from the ashes of the two decades of civil strife.

Speaking to the press after the talks in Jawari’s official residence in Mogadishu, president Sharif said their meeting was aimed at “making sure that everything is on the right track” since the country is now in transition.

He urged the parliament to elect a visionary leader who will see Somalia gets stable government.

Prof. Jawari on his part said they agreed to continue with the ongoing process in order to lead the country out of the transitional period.

Jawari said their activities will not be hampered by the missing MPs whose nomination have not been finalised and urged relevant authorities to speed up their selection process and submit the list of the remaining MPs.

Their meeting comes just a day before Somali lawmakers choose the next president as the horn of African nation sets up its first stable central government since the collapse of the country’s central government in 1991.

The new parliament, which was selected last month, will hold a ballot to choose the president from about twenty plus candidates.

The scheduled presidential vote is the latest in a series of political transitions in the nation.

In recent weeks, Somalia adopted a provisional constitution, held an inaugural meeting of its new parliament and elected a new speaker and his two deputies inside the country after 21 years of civil war.
