Previously riots erupted in Mombasa over the murder of Muslim cleric Sheikh Aboud Rogo whose supporter’s accused the police for killing him.

Sheikh Abubakar Ahmed is accused of mobilizing youths in Mombasa to protest, target security officers and torch churches after Rogo was killed in the port city.

Abubakar who denied the charges is on the list of the United States sanctions for allegedly supporting Al-Shabaab through recruitment and fundraising missions.

The riots saw the death of civilians and security officers in the port city of Mombasa.

Abubakar was remanded in custody until the fifth day of September when a bail hearing will be held for him.
