In a press release, Irina Bokova says a free and independent press is an essential contribution to dialogue and national reconciliation in Somalia and necessary for democracy and rule of law.
Bokova asked concerned authorities to do all in their power to stem the violence that is claiming so many civilian lives in Somalia including a shocking number of media workers.
Since 2009 18 journalists have been killed in Somalia who were keeping the country informed before they died.

UNESCO condemns killing of Somali journalist.
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova on Friday condemned the killing of Mohamud Ali Keyre, a Somali journalist of horyaalmedia.com.
