Lower Shabelle regional authority has declared parts of the region safe and sound after Somali forces recently ousted rebel rule in Afgoye and its surrounding areas.

In an exclusive interview with Sunatimes, the area regional governor Abdikadir Hajji Mohamed said Afgoye and its environs enjoys reliable security situation.

The governor said further security measure will be kept in place to keep militants at bay from sneaking into the area and jeopardizing the prevailing stability in the area.

He revealed that security operations aimed at clearing out remnant Al-Shabaab militants and their sympathisers from the area are now in full gear.

Mohamed stated that the region is home to hundreds of internally displaced people who fled their villages in Bakool and the two Juba regions during the recent human tragedy in the country. He said plans are now underway to set up camps for these IDPs.

The governor also revealed that an Italian non-governmental organisation will soon start distributing relief food in the region.

In May Somali troops and African Union forces took control of Afgoye, about 30km from the capital, Mogadishu, after Al-Shabaab group abandoned these towns undefended.
