Mogadishu: Sunatimes- The Transitional Federal Government of Somalia has chosen the day marking the 50th anniversary of Somalia’s independence to start a major operation against Al-shabab and Hizbul-Islam militias in the capital.

Late yesterday, President Sheriff Sheikh Ahmed led his government forces to start the operation as he was at the frontline and performed his Maghrib (evening prayers) at plain land, near the Abdiaziz district in Mogadishu. The President was accompanied by ministers as well as heads of the TFG’s military and police.

Al-shabab fighters were also preparing and last evening everyone in Mogadishu was contemplating what would be the start of the worst fighting between the two groups struggling for the control of the strategic capital city in war torn Somalia.

The government of Sheikh Sheriff has repeatedly announced that it will carry out this operation to oust the militia. The government was earlier criticized for dragging its feet about starting said operation.

Somali Police Commander, General Ali Mohamed Hassan, told media that the government was ready to free the Somali people from these militias who are resisting creation of true Somali nationhood, its people and its government.
