    Newly appointed Beledweyne mayor bans firearms in the city

    The newly appointed mayor of Beledweyne town on Tuesday made firearms illegal within the vicinity of city just a day after he was voted in as the mayor of the city.

The newly appointed mayor of Beledweyne town on Tuesday made firearms illegal within the vicinity of city just a day after he was voted in as the mayor of the city.

Mayor Mohamed Hassan Nuriye also directed that government soldiers be confined into their bases citing security reasons. Nuriye made the remarks today while speaking to the press at his office.

He said soldiers are only allowed to carry firearms with them inside the city when conducting security operations.

He threatened to deal with those who go against the directive, saying that individuals who are found carrying firearms inside the city will have their firearms confiscated and risk unspecified jail term.

The mayor also revealed that city beautification process will soon kick off, promising that the city will look different in a week time.

His sentiment comes as a time the local administration has embarked on registration of all people living in the city for security reasons. The registration process is set to continue for three days.
