AMISOM Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Fred Mugisha said in a press release today, that the recent mortar attacks in parts of Mogadishu was aimed at intimidating people, urging Somalis to stand firm against what he called “enemies of peace”.

Mugisha called on the public to come forward with information about possible attacks and explosives, promising that the force will stand with them in seeking to build a better way of life.

He condemned the recent mortar attacks which slammed into a camp for internally displaced persons near the presidential palace, killing six people including four family members.

Mugisha accused the Al-Qaeda linked militants for attacking unarmed civilians, saying that they are not concerned about the welfare of the Somali people.

“If they were seeking to improve the situation of the people, they wouldn’t be attacking unarmed civilians,” added the force commander.

He, however, cautioned that the attacks may not be the last and called on Somalis to stand firm and be resilient against Al-Qaeda’s desire to spread chaos.

AMISOM says it has been working closely with the local population in the city to intercept up to70 percent of improvised explosive devices planted within the city.

The force noted yesterday’s foiled suicide attack at Fagah Junction after receiving tip-off from civilians in the area.
