    Mahiga praises the recent Garowe II conference

    The meeting was a follow up of the first national constitutional conference in Garowe last December which adopted principles governing the drafting of a new constitution and reforming the parliament.

The meeting was a follow up of the first national constitutional conference in Garowe last December which adopted principles governing the drafting of a new constitution and reforming the parliament.

Nairobi (Sunatimes) The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia, Ambassador Augustine Mahiga has hailed the proceeding and the outcome of the recently concluded Garowe II meeting on constitution.

Speaking to Bar-kulan Mahiga said the attendance of the meeting was full capacity, with new participants from areas recently captured from Al-Shabaab, calling it “a major participation.”

Mahiga noted that participants discussed new issues on the drafting of the agenda and the system of government that are crucial aspect in formulating and writing the constitution.

“The stakeholders of the roadmap came with bigger constituencies to Garowe, the agenda was very elaborate, not only elaborated the principles which everyone wanted to be done and they were elaborated to the extent possible in a very satisfactory way, added Mahiga.

He further noted that there was tremendous improvement in the atmosphere of consensus building during the three-day conference.

The meeting was a follow up of the first national constitutional conference in Garowe last December which adopted principles governing the drafting of a new constitution and reforming the parliament.

Attending the meeting in Garowe were leaders from the Somali government, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia, Ambassador Augustine Mahiga and leaders from semi-autonomous regions in Somalia as well as members of a pro-government Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamaa group.

Somaliland which broke away in 1991 had no delegates represented it in this talks.
