Dadaab (Sunatimes) Kenyan police in Dadaab refugee complex, the world’s largest refugee camp, last night arrested two Somali men in connection with yesterday’s blast that killed a policeman and injured two others in Hagardera camp.

The explosion hit Police vehicle in Hagardera refugee camp of Dadaab, killing the policeman and injuring two others and destroyed the vehicle. The blast was said to be a roadside bomb.

Dadaab refugee camp is home to more than 450,000 people, mainly Somalis who fled famine and conflict in their country.

A Kenyan official was quoted as saying that he suspects Somali militants of carrying out the explosion.

Acting Dadaab District Commissioner Bernard Ole Kipury said he suspects Al-Shabaab was behind the blast, BBC reports.

He accused the militants of disguising themselves as refugees to enter the camp.

He added that the authorities have intensified patrols in the camp and would soon be conducting operations to flush out the militants.

Somali refugees in Dadaab expressed concern over attacks on Kenyan territory, fearing that the attacks may worsen their situation since aid agencies have already suspended their activities in these camps.

The explosion is latest in a spate of grenade and landmine attacks in Kenya’s border regions with Somalia since its troops crossed into the neighbouring Somalia.

The explosion comes just a week after four people were injured in two separate grenade attacks on two restaurants in northern Kenyan town of Garissa.

Earlier this month, a Kenyan policeman was also killed and three people wounded in a similar explosion in Ifo II section of Dadaab refugee camp.

Kenyan troops moved into Somalia in October to fight Al-Shabaab militants who have promised revenge attacks.

Kenyan officials blame Al-Shabaab rebel group or their sympathisers for a series of recent shootings and bombings, although armed bandits also operate in the border areas.

Regional armies are now pushing against Shabaab positions in Somalia, with Kenyan forces in the South, Ugandan and Burundian African Union forces in Mogadishu, and Ethiopian troops in the West.
