Mogadishu (Sunatimes) A Somali-Canadian man suspected of attempting to participate in terrorism activities appeared in Brampton court on Wednesday, where an indictment was filed against him.
The Toronto security guard, Mohamed Hassan Hersi, 25, was arrested last March for terrorism-related offences as he boarded a flight at Pearson airport to North Africa.
Police alleged that Hersi was headed to Somalia to join Al-Qaeda inspired Al-Shabaab, a group deemed as terrorists in Canada and the U.S.
Sujata Raisinghani of Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) has reportedly said Hersi who appeared Wednesday in Brampton court where an indictment was filed against him will go straight to trial.
Hersi was arrested last March following a six-month RCMP probe called “Project Severe.”
He was charged with attempting to knowingly participate in an activity of a terrorist group and counseling a person to participate in a terrorist group.
The former guard was released on bail in April and placed under house arrest. He was banned from using the Internet, cell phone or smart phones.
Some of Hersi’s relatives said he was travelling to Egypt to study Arabic but police say he wanted to join Al-Shabaab group battling the Somali government.
Hersi graduated from the University of Toronto with a science degree in 2009 but had been working as a security guard.
He will return to Brampton court on Jan. 27.
