The clash erupted after Puntland forces raided a compound in Garsor neighbourhood

Galkacyo (Sunatimes) Tension is reportedly high in Puntland administered northern part of Galkayo town after unknown gunmen on Sunday night shot dead two people including former head of Puntland’s Development and Research Centre Abdikadir Jama Yasin.

Armed clan militias from the deceased men’s family are said to be pouring into Garsor neighbourhood, the epicenter of the September clashes in northern Galkayo. The trickling in militias have heightened trepidation in the area.

The area administration has issued no comment on this issue.

Unknown gunmen shot dead the slain PDRC for5mer official and his colleague in Galkayo’s Garsor neighbourhood.

The assailants immediately fled the scene of the incident, eyewitnesses say.

Punland security officers immediately arrived at the scene and started search operations. No arrests were so far made.

In early September, at least 20 people have been killed and over forty others wounded following a deadly clash between Puntland forces and local armed clan militias in northern of the city.

The clash erupted after Puntland forces raided a compound in Garsor neighbourhood, where armed men were allegedly hiding, prompting a two day fierce fighting.

Puntland claimed that it was fighting Al-Shabaab terrorist group and vowed to purge them from the area. But local elders rubbished the claims, saying that it was local clan militias fighting the area administration.

Puntland president Abdirahman Forole immediately called for ceasefire and removal of what he branded terrorist militias from the area.

Farole accused the neighbouring Galmudug administration of orchestrating violence in the north, an accusation denied by Galmudug.

Galkayo is divided into two parts, with the north coming under the jurisdiction of Puntland while south comes under Galmudug.

The two breakaway regions of Somalia have been pointing fingers at each other over insecurity in the region.

The relation between two administrations which has been an all-time-low was mended in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, during the recent UN-backed three day consultative meeting.
