Somalia and Iran have agreed to follow up discussions in Tehran on continuation of the Islamic Republic's humanitarian aid to the famine-stricken people in the Horn of Africa nation.

Somalia President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed will pay a visit to the Iranian capital in the near future, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said in Tehran early Wednesday after he wrapped up a day-long visit to Somalia.

Salehi lauded efforts by Iran's Red Crescent Society (IRCS) to dispatch the country's humanitarian relief to the famine-hit Somalia and noted that the IRCS is currently providing nearly 35,000 Somalis with aid, IRNA reported.

The Iranian minister pointed to the “painful” situation of Somali Muslims, including women and children, and expressed optimism that Iran's aid will play a major role in relieving their pains.

Salehi arrived in the Somali capital of Mogadishu on Tuesday to review the latest situation in the famine-ravaged country.

During his stay in Mogadishu, he held talks with senior Somali officials, including Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, Foreign Minister Mohamed Ibrahim and Minister for Internal Affairs and Security Abdishakur Sheikh Hassan Farah.

The Iranian foreign minister also visited some hospitals and the largest refugee camp in Mogadishu as well as the camp set up by the IRCS, which accommodates 200 households.

Tehran has so far dispatched six humanitarian aid convoys to the African country. It has provided Somalia with 25 million dollars of humanitarian aid, including foodstuff and medicine.

Meanwhile, the IRCS plans to dispatch a 5,000-ton consignment of aid to Somalia by sea soon.

The United Nations has warned that more than 13 out of every 10,000 children aged less than five die in the Somalia famine zone every day.

The drought and famine have affected more than 11.8 million people across Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Somalia has been the hardest-hit country in what is being described as the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in 60 years.
