Muslim Aid has been working in Somalia for more than 15 years with
programmes in healthcare (mother and child care) and education.

We began distribution of emergency aid on July 10 in Mogadishu, handing
out food packs, water and kitchen utensils to around 1000 people on the
first day of distribution. The first stage is targeting IDP camps in
Mogadishu and Afgoye corridor, a region of Somalia with already alarming

high numbers of internally displaced people. After Afghanistan and Iraq,
Somalia is the third largest refugee-producing country in the world.
There are acute levels of hunger and malnutrition as food prices
continue to escalate, with women, children and elderly increasingly
vulnerable. Muslim Aids Country Director Ahmed Abdi Muhummed said:
currently the drought is resulting in around 2500 people entering
Mogadishu every day. Many people are travelling hundreds of kilometers
on foot; one lady left her house with six children, sadly she arrived
with only two.

Our field office has not established a permanent food distribution
centre in Mogadishu. Instead, it is delivering relief to IDPs in as far
off areas as Afgoye Corridor. The photographs on flickr are from one of
the distribution points in Mogadishu. The relief so far provided
includes oil, rice and utensils. Needs for other non-food items such as
medicines are being examined by our team. Muslim Aid Somalia is
proceeding with such distributions in other areas and will continue as
long as its relief efforts are funded by donors.

Muslim Aids Head of International Programmes and the Emergency Manager
are today travelling from Nairobi to Garbatullah in northern Kenya for a
needs assessment, before travelling to other areas in the region.
