Colombus (Sunatimes) Somali community in the United State has been
in the last couple of days holding crisis meetings aimed at discussing on how
they can provide relief aid to Somalia’s drought stricken population.
After three days of discussion on the current drought situation in
Somalia, the Somali community of Columbus in the United State has outlined a
comprehensive plans in providing humanitarian aid to drought victims of Gedo,
Bay and Bakol regions of Somalia, which is said to be the hardest hit areas in
south of Somalia.
A member of the Somali community of Columbus’ drought rescue committee,
Abdullahi Yussuf, said they are doing all that is possible to ensure that the
funds raised in their drought response campaign for the Somalia’s drought
victims will be utilized as anticipated.
Rowdo Olad, who is also part of the drought rescue committee,
lamented that the drought situation in Somalia has claimed the lives of many
people and their livestock, saying that she is so disappointed with the current
political stalemate in Somalia, making it difficult for relief aid to reach to
the needy people in the country.
A number of Somali youth volunteers carrying disturbing images of
drought victims are reportedly conducting door-to-door fund drive in their
effort to extend a helping for the thousands of Somalis affected by the current
devastating drought in Somalia.
Somalia’s current drought situation is appalling, with
people dying of starvation due to the high magnitude of the drought after
experiencing several years of successive rainfall failures and the concomitants
rapid erosion of assets and livelihoods, rendering people in Somalia to suffer
from water shortages and declining access to food that forced local population
to flee to refugee camps in the neighbouring countries.
