Mogadishu (Sunatimes) Somalia’s parliament has today unanimously
approved the June 9th Kampala
Accord which has extended the terms of both the presidency and the parliament,
a day after a similar sitting ended in disarray.
The session which was attended by 436 legislators approved the
Kampala Accord which has ended the political impasse between the speaker of the
parliament and the president that has earlier rocked the Somali government.
Out of the 436 legislators present in the session, 393 voted in
favour of Accord while 36 voted against it, with the remaining seven withheld
their vote.
Chairing the sitting, the speaker of the parliament, Sharif Hassan
Sheikh Adan, later announced the outcome of votes which saw the approval of the
Kampala Accord that sparked controversy within the parliament.
During yesterday’s session which was marred by confusions, the
speaker called on parliamentarians to abide laws governing the house and
approve the Kampala Accord but defiant MPs continued taunting him, with some of
them threatening to shoot down some of the articles in the Accord.
Today’s approval of the Accord comes a day after defiant MPs booed
the speaker of the national assembly forcing him to adjourn the sitting.
