Nairobi( Sunatimes) The head of the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), Antonio Guterres, has called the international aid agencies to go into Somalia to help drought victims.
In an interview with the BBC, Mr Guterres said Somali refugees are currently facing difficulties and urged aid agencies to immediately intervene the devastating drought situation in Somalia.
The UNHCR chief also raised concerns of the plight of millions of drought victims in the Horn of Africa, saying aid agencies should intervene immediately to reduce the drought’s impending catastrophic humanitarian impact in the region.
Meanwhile, doctors without borders (MSF) say refugee camps have been established inside Somalia to help the most desperate and vulnerable refugees arriving in the camps, in a bid to safe their lives. But the MSF says it can only provide medical help, but has no food to give them.
Thousands of Somalis are daily trekking into the neighbouring Ethiopia or Kenya to reach help, while similar number of refugees desperately in need of relief food arrives in Mogadishu in a pathetic situation.
