Mogadishu (Sunatimes) when the US President Barack Obama declared the dramatic news of the death of Al Qaeda Leader, Osama Bin Laden, who was the mastermind of the most devastating attack on American soil in modern times and one of the most hunted man the world has ever seen.

Following the announcement, Bin Laden’s name has been in most of the headlines across the planet. Countless number of reactions from heads of states, politicians, analysts as well as individuals still keeps flowing from all corners.

 

Ethiopia joined the rest of the world by saluting all parties that participated on the raid, labeling it ‘a big victory for the global anti-terrorist forces’.

 

In a statement issued this late afternoon, the Ethiopian government Communication Affairs office said Bin Laden’s Al Qaeda has wrecked havoc in stateless Somalia and killed several innocent peoples in other Horn of African countries, terrorizing and destabilizing the region as a whole.

 

"In our own immediate vicinity, Bin Laden’s Al Qaeda has wrecked havoc in stateless Somalia, killed and maimed many innocent people in Kenya and Tanzania, and has for years been engaged in terrorist activities aimed at destabilizing the Horn of Africa," says Ethiopia.

 

Surrounded by problematic countries such as Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea, and just across the Red Sea from turbulent Yemen, Ethiopia is the United States’ principal strategic partner in the horn of Africa.

 

In various occasion Al Qaeda had also been warning that it would attack Ethiopia and declared Jihad following the entry of Ethiopian military to the war-torn neighboring Somalia in 2006 that drove out Somalia’s Islamic extremists led by Al-Shabab.

 

"As a victim of repeated terrorist attacks, Ethiopia feels and shares the agony and suffering of nations that lost citizens to senseless terrorist attacks," said Ethiopia commending the action of US Special forces.

 

"The Federal Democratic Government of Ethiopia salutes all parties involved in this operation, particularly the US anti-terrorist team, for hunting and destroying this unrepentant leader of an international terrorist organization".

 

Underscoring that although the death of Osama Bin Laden does not mean the end the anti-terrorist struggle, Ethiopian government indicated that "it is, nonetheless, a big victory for the global anti-terror forces".

 

The Ethiopian government statement further said, "Thus, on this happy occasion, we congratulate the people and the Government of the United States of America".

 

According to the 2010 report of the Congressional Research Service, Ethiopia is one of the 28 priority countries earmarked for U.S. aid to boost its effectiveness as an ally against terrorism. Ethiopia is collaborating with Washington in fighting Islamists in Somalia, deploying peace-keeping troops to various African hotspots, holding joint trainings and hosting U.S. military delegations.
